Juho has lived aboard his boat s/y Sylvia above the Arctic Circle for a couple of years and has sailed through two winters. The question that people ask him the most is: How do you heat your boat and not freeze to death?

With 3 types of heaters on Sylvia, all of which he has installed himself, Juho decided to put together a video discussing all the systems he has on board and the pros and cons of each. Probably the most interesting is the Refleks system, a diesel drip stove that does not use any electricity.

Juho also gives his views on other types of heaters and tips and tricks for those of you who might already have a heater on board.

Juho Karhu, 33, from Finland, lives in his sailboat s/y Sylvia. He’s not only a sailor but also an eager freeskier and kitesurfer. He’s a translator and works from his boat.

In 2018 Juho sailed from Finland to northern Norway to ski in the coastal mountains that are only accessible by boat. In the spring of 2019 he sailed over the Barents Sea to Svalbard with a group of friends, where they skied in all of Svalbard’s western fjords. In Svalbard they also collected snow samples for the study of how persistent organic pollutants are spreading into the Arctic.

Currently Juho is spending his second winter sailing and skiing in Norway.
