Sweden - Health
The Swedish healthcare system is divided into regional public and private sectors, so quality of care and fees charged will vary throughout the country. The country has an excellent reputation for quality healthcare.
Anyone travelling to Sweden and the entire Schengen area from a country that is subject to visa requirements must purchase Travel health insurance with a minimum coverage of at least 30,000€. European residents can use their EU health card in the public system.
Vaccine-Preventable Diseases:
Make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines before your trip.
Everyone 5 years of age and older should get fully vaccinated for COVID-19 before travel.
Vaccinations for Hepatitis A is recommended for travellers visiting smaller cities, villages, or rural areas where exposure might occur through food or water.
Hepatitis B is recommended for unvaccinated travelers of all ages to Sweden.
Infants 6 to 11 months old traveling internationally should get 1 dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine before travel.
Other Disease Concerns:
Ticks are spreading in all coastal areas except in the north. In some areas, ticks carry two types of disease, Lyme disease and TBE (Tick-Borne Encephalitis). TBE vaccine is available. Lyme disease must be treated with antibiotics.
Prescription Drugs:
When you travel to Sweden you may bring prescription drugs, but only if you intend to use
them for a medical reason and it is for your personal use.
Pharmacies are usually open during normal shop opening hours. You can also get an emergency prescription at hospitals. Prescriptions are normally done digitally in Sweden. If you have a prescription from your country of residence that you want dispensed in a Swedish pharmacy, ask your doctor if it is possible to submit the prescription digitally or if you must bring it with you on paper.
