Freetown can be used as an emergency fuelling stop. However, it is not recommended to stop here for any other reason. If just stopping for fuel there is no requirement to clear in or out.

The river at Freetown is wide and does not provide good shelter. Local pilots warn not to anchor out during the night as there is a lot of crime.

The diesel is of dubious quality and should be filtered. It arrives by can from the local filling station. Water is also available.

    Data Entry3 says:

Freetown was the base for the British Royal Navy’s Africa squadron, and is one of the largest natural harbors in West Africa. There is a good golf course there, the Freetown Golf Club, and a nice beach, Lumley Beach. Unfortunately there is not a marina that caters to yachtsmen, and the two piers there are dedicated to commercial traffic and to the Sierra Leone Navy. While the Sierra Leonians are very pleasant people, there is a lot of crime in Freetown, so yachtsmen should be cautious about stopping here.
