Restrictions pertaining to yachts:

  • Yachts are obliged to obtain a copy of Saudi Arabian Ports Rules and Regulations while in Saudi Arabian waters.
  • Electronic devices may be screened by customs officials on arrival and departure.
  • Fishing, swimming, and the consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited while in harbor.
  • Penalties for the possession of, or trade in alcohol are severe. Both result in prison sentences. Do not arrive in Saudi Arabia under the influence of alcohol.
  • Playing loud music is prohibited. Music audible outside a private space is a punishable offence.
  • If you bring medication with you, carry a doctor’s prescription.
  • Binoculars should not be brought into Saudi Arabia and may be confiscated at the port of entry.

General Restrictions:

  • The public practice of any form of religion other than Islam is illegal; as is an intention to convert others. However, the Saudi authorities accept the private practice of religions other than Islam, and you can bring a religious text into the country as long as it is for your personal use. Importing larger quantities than this can carry severe penalties.
  • Men and women are required to refrain from public displays of affection, and avoid using profane language or gestures. Taking pictures or recording videos without permission is not permitted. Visitors to Saudi Arabia should familiarise themselves with public decency laws.
  • Do not take photographs of Saudi women, airports, or government buildings.
  • LBGTQ people and/or any homosexual acts of any kind are illegal in Saudi Arabia. Consequences are severe.
  • Any religious symbols other than those of the Islamic faith are illegal to display in Saudi Arabia.
  • Alcohol is banned and photography frowned upon.
  • Unmarried couples sharing private spaces (i.e., a boat or hotel room) is taboo.
  • Mecca and Medina are off limits to non-Muslims as are all mosques. Consequences can be severe.
  • Smoking is forbidden in government buildings.

Posted on behalf of SY Tamarisk:
Saudi Arabia – if heading for the Gulf of Aqaba, it is impossible to pass without entering Saudi waters. Use the main shipping channel at the gulf entrance, not the protected route behind the Saudi Islands, otherwise yachts will be stopped and detained by Saudi coast guard (clueless ones).
