ARRIVAL FORMALITIES

The official Guidelines are that vessels over 30 net tonnages are required to have an agent but not for vessels under 30 tons.  However, it may be an advantage to have one for convenience. To enter Port Salalah all vessels must have an agent. See Clearance Agents.

Advance Notification:

The port should be called on VHF Channel 16 one hour before arrival. Normally permission will be given to enter the harbour and directions should be followed as to where to go for clearance.

Port officials will likely speak some English.  The radio operator will speak English.

General Process:

You must present a clearance certificate from your previous port or face a fine.

On arrival, boats are normally boarded by Quarantine, Immigration, Customs and Harbor officials. No one should go ashore before formalities are completed.

All crew will need to pay for visas, plus a cruising fee for the yacht (see Fees below).

Passport and ship’s papers are retained until departure.

Domestic Cruising:

Outward clearance must be conducted even if the destination is another Omani port.

CLEARING OUT

Formalities for outward clearance are complicated and sufficient time should be allowed for them. All offices must be visited in order, starting with police and finishing with the Harbour Master.

Port control will advise on the suitability of time to leave the port according to the prevailing traffic.

Just want to note on UAE you mention that the Gulf of Oman and sailing area from Muscat Oman, around the beautiful Musandam Peninsular and into the Arabian Gulf, are quite safe which they are, and I thought it should be mentioned here on the Oman page as well.

I have visited Salalah in March 2014. Great surprise – you need an agent to come inside the port. It cost 200-300 USD. You need to have 3rd party liability insurance, if not – you’ll be fined (130USD). Port fees were about 200 USD (including water).

You can fill diesel, an agent will help you to agree with BP office. Staying alongside near Port control tower. There is a shop for provisioning inside the port with free delivery onboard. So, very expensive country, if you have enough diesel and water, go directly to much more friendly Aden.
