Nosy Hara - General Info
Located on the NW tip of Madagascar, Nosy Hara is 20 miles from Antsiranana and 75 miles from Nosy Be.
The Nosy Hara archipelago is made up of about 12 small islands surrounded by coral reef and is one of the first large-scale marine protected areas in Madagascar.
Half the islands are made up of unique Malagasy ‘tsingy’ ecotype, producing cliffs and crags of weathered limestone popular with climbers. The other half is sand. Four of the islands (Nosy Hara, Nosy Lakandava, Nosy Anjombovola, and Nosy Andranzara) have a forest growing amongst the crags inhabited by endemic birds, frogs and lizards.
Nearby Nosy Hao is also worth a visit, with an abundance of sea turtle from March to August (the largest population in Madagascar) and wonderful views at low tide.
There are 2 rangers living on Nosy Hara who have carved paths into the jagged rock for visitors.
Position:
12° 13.79’S, 49° 0.99’E (anchorage at N end of the island)

We recently visited Guillaume anchored off the beach in front of his Club & Snack Bar. We had strong winds from east & west at times some chop but no swell. He confirmed there is no charge from the Nosy Hara National Park for anchoring off the beach but there is at the Island. Guill and his family were very helpful and we found many things to do here before heading to the more touristic area of Nosy Be.
– Day trip to Windsor Castle 391m, an easy but hot walk (take water and go early) superb 360° views all over the north including Diego Suarez. It’s about 3 miles by yacht from the village a lot further by road. Anchored 12 13.5S 49 09.1E Get Guill to order lunch from Davids Village the night before, collect a guide 10,000AR we had Fred, not much English but he was very caring and pointed out things on the way. There are old French gun emplacements past the village.
– Plane Wreck. Just off the beach, marked with a buoy is the wreck of a Blackburn Roc fighter bomber in approx 5m water. Visibility depends on tide and wind.
– Gulliame can help arrange a trip to Diego Suarez and a day trip to Mt D’Ambre national park would be easy from here. It felt like a place we could leave the boat safely to do a few days inland travel in the North. Unfortunately, we had to move on but wished we had stayed longer.
It is now possible to get authorisation to visit the Glorieuses Islands.
