Primary healthcare services in Lithuania are provided in public or private outpatient healthcare institutions. Specialized outpatient care is provided in outpatient clinics and hospital polyclinics, which can be either state or municipality-owned or private.

If the healthcare provider does not have an agreement with one of the Territorial Health Insurance Funds, costs of private healthcare services must be paid by the patient.

Emergency care can be provided by family doctors during services hours. Urgent treatment is also provided by hospital emergency units.

Travel insurance is required if you need a Schengen Visa for Lithuania. The minimum coverage of medical costs is at least 30,000 EUR.

For nationals with visa-free travel, insurance is optional but strongly recommended as medical costs can be expensive for foreigners, especially as you will need to pay for any prescriptions.

For more information about healthcare available to European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) holders in Lithuania, see the National Health Insurance Fund under the Ministry of Health webpage.

Recommended Vaccinations

Aside from routine vaccines, the Centers for Disease Control recommend vaccinations for Hepatitis A & B, Measles (for infants 6 to 11 months old) and Tick-borne Encephalitis.
