Porto Rafti - Docking

Photo taken by Noah Darnell, from the shore in the north of the southern part of the bay. There are three cruising yachts (two are rafted together) in the photo and a few local boats.

The bay at Porto Rafti is simply beautiful and ideal for anchoring.

The bay is split into two parts, north and south, separated by a peninsula (Ak Pounda) with private residences on it. There are islands in the bay, the larger of which is private property and may be intermittently patrolled (fines for trespassing). Although the bay is open to the east and southeast, these off-lying islands provide good shelter from the Meltemi.

The busier anchorage is the northern, larger anchorage. The northwest corner of the bay is the best anchoring spot in four – 10 meters. There are some rocks and shallow patches but mostly the bottom is firm sand or mud.

This is an active fishing port with increased traffic in the mornings. The southern anchorage is usually quieter.

The small fishing quay can be used by shallow-draft vessels if there’s space, on the north side of Ak Pounda.

There are numerous permanent mooring balls in the area — both north and south — but these seem to be for local boats and their quality is uncertain. The anchorages are busiest in the summer cruising season as it is a good anchorage for a day sail to the nearby Islands.

There are restaurants and cafes lining the north and south coasts of the northern bay. The southern part of the Bay is mostly residential, but the south beach of the south bay (near a prominent white church) can get more lively on weekends.

Services ashore are good and the mountains surrounding Porto Rafti are excellent for hiking.
