Vaitahu

On the western side of Tahuata. Approach is straightforward. This is a gusty valley, some coral heads (deep), must search for good sandy bottom. A good place is just in front of beach ramp next to church, 50 yd. out, in line w/ pirogues moorings.. Accelerated winds can rush down the valley with gusts up to 50 kts.    There are restaurants here and a new shop has opened, half way up the hill on the way to Hapatoni selling salad ingredients not available in town.  There’s also a new van on the waterfront run by Adrienne, selling coffee (instant), canned drinks, home made cakes and pies.

The ferry to Hiva Ova runs one a week on Wednesdays leaving Vaitahi at 7am and returning from Hiva Ova at 2pm.  Make sure your dinghy isn’t on the quay when it returns. Book the day before travel with tickets available from the Mairie (town hall) at a cost of 5000pxf return.

Hanamoenoa

Also on the western side of Tahuata, this used to be known as Stephen’s Bay.  Stephen passed away in 2021, but the structure of his home remains.

Approach into the bay is straightforward. It is a popular anchorage with good protection in southeasterly wind. 10m depth with sandy bottom. One of the few white sandy beaches in the Marquesas.

Hapatoni

Also on the western side. Anchor north of the village, below a crucifix on the hill over rocks.
