  • There are restricted ports and areas and these should be confirmed with the authorities when clearing into Eritrea. For example, Harmil is a military outpost and should not be visited by yachts.
  • The Dhalak Islands are currently out of bounds (more details at Massawa clearance).
  • It is recommended not to venture too close to the coast where there are military installations.
  • Photographing government buildings and military installations is not allowed.
  • A travel permit is required to visit Asmara. See Massawa Clearance for full details.
  • LGBTI Travelers: Consensual same-sex sexual activity is punishable by incarceration of ten days to three years. Antidiscrimination laws relating to LGBTQI+ persons do not exist. There are no known LGBTQI+ organizations in the country. Hotels do not allow two females or two males to share one room unless it has separate beds.
