Suwarrow - Activities, Attractions & Shopping
As this is a marine park, it is not permitted to visit any of the other islands apart from Anchorage, without permission from the caretaker. Due to the rat eradication programme, there are no trips arranged to other islands.
Visiting cruisers often help with rubbish clearing on the outlying islands, in particular, the first arrivals after the cyclone season. Yachts must then take this rubbish away as there is no facility for disposing of rubbish on Suwarrow.
Fishing by pot is allowed with permission from the caretaker, but no spear fishing or taking of coral, shells etc.
There are quite a lot of Black Tip Sharks and some Grey Sharks around the anchorage and reef. It is advised against throwing food scraps off the boat. There are manta rays on a coral patch close to the anchorage. Including a ‘clean station’ where other fish clean the mouth an gills of the rays.
The snorkeling is wonderful if you are not nervous around sharks.
There are gigantic coconut crabs the size of garbage bin lids on the island. Be careful where you walk at night as they can break fingers and toes like snapping twigs.

Please note that we undertook a rat eradication exercise on Suwarrow 2 years ago, with help from the Critical Ecosystem Protection Fund and the European Union. We ask all yachts to be very vigilant that they do not bring any rats or mice to Suwarrow.
This is a very important bird breeding ground for the Pacific Islands, and we need to keep it rat-free. We also ask that boats are sprayed for other invasives, such as fire ants, or anything else that could destroy our paradise!
If you have any suggestions about how to spread this message out to all yachts that visit Suwarrow, please let us know at info@tiscookislands.org (Te Ipukarea Society, Birdlife International partner in the Cook Islands)
