There is a fee of $270 for the Maritime Health Dept – who confiscated some eggs. Very friendly Yacht Club especially manager Abraham. Go straight there and not into the commercial port! Keep in the middle of the breakwaters of the yacht club and commercial harbour – 8 metres of water.

Once inside a rocky bottom to anchor and pick up a stern buoy with the help of the Yacht Club launch. Use VHF 16 when going in. Armada very friendly – what fresh air after Ecuador and Peru. Fuel by tanker arrangement with Abraham – who is a great seaman.

I confirm $425 for the sanitary ( not agriculture) inspection. I checked while going south that the other port of entry does not charge this only Arica. I met other cruisers and none of them had to pay that fee. I know another vessel that checked in Arica with the Chilean owner and they did pay the 234291 pesos.

I am planning to visit South America next year. Although I am not sure if Arica will be my port of entry to Chile I do have a limited budget so have a keen interest in knowing regulations and cost for clearing in.

Your reported $425 Agriculture inspection fee got my attention as it seemed unusual for what I know about Chile (I am a USA/Chile dual citizen). I contacted the SAG office in Santiago via their website to ask about it. They replied that they do indeed have an inspection record for your vessel on 24 June but that the inspection was free.

They suggested that perhaps the port authority charged you for some other reason. Do you still have the receipt “factura” for that charge? I would very much like to follow up on this if possible. BTW, I have also contacted SENASA (Agriculture Dept of Peru) but have not gotten a reply. I really hope visiting South America is not as expensive as you report.

Monday, June 23 2014: Legacy pulled in Arica harbour after 4days and 5hrs under power from Callao, Peru, Clear authorities within an hour. We had to go to the Health Department next day to pay $425 for Sanitary inspection…

Another boat in the harbour coming from Puerto Montt in the South did not pay anything. The “Club” charge $20 per day ( with launch). You drop your anchor and use a tern line on one of their moorings buoy, Rocky bottom, anchorage under big surge.

Water by Jerrycans, no electricity, Sporadic hot water shower, clean restrooms ( we are in winter) Fuel at the gas station, Senor Abraham (mgr) is helpful. Shopping is nearby.
