Feedback from a yacht that recently arrived in La Graciosa.
“We came to the island around noon, directly from Lisbon (4 days) and tried to get a place in the harbour. Well inside, we aimed for one of the many vacant spots, but soon became aware of a couple of guys in coveralls shouting at us. They immediately told us that there were no vacancy, but we asked them for permission to do some shopping. That was not possible, but when we told them it was for food, we felt that they understood and gave us the option of rafting up on one of the two boats. We were waved away when we approached the first one and when approaching the second, they started using whistles, shouted at us and basically chased us out of the harbor (they had likely been in contact with a superior in the meantime). It was unpleasant and may be even a bit rude. There were numerous vacant berth’s and at least 50 meters of unoccupied quays that could have been used for putting a person onshore and do the corresponding pick up.”
Editor’s Note: La Graciosa is one of the 15 government-run ports throughout the islands (Puerto Canarios). Berths in these harbors must be pre-booked using the website or App – go to https://solicitudes.puertoscanarios.es/ and click on “Particulares. Formulario de datos.” This takes you to the online booking form. Alternatively, you can download the App to book via your phone. Whichever way you pre-book, it is always recommended to call the port prior to arrival to double-check your booking has been succesful. Caleta del Sebo is a lovely spot off the beaten track but with limited facilities. Don’t expect too much of the staff. You must pre-book or they won’t let you in the harbour. Easy provided you apply through the website or app at least 48 hours in advance but preferably a week. You need to look closely at your confirmation email to see your allocated Berth but they are not numbered. Staff with batten and handcuffs will point out the error if your ways.
They actively hide in bad weather only to emerge and tell you to move when conditions improve. Well worth the effort a delightful spot. No electricity but water one toilet and cold water shower. 17€ for 31 ft yacht
We visited Caleta del Sebo 8 July to 16 July 2016. The marina in Areciffe fixed the permission for the harbour and was very helpful. The town is charming and it reminds you of a western town where you would expect Clint Eastwood riding in. The hardware store is well equipped and there are two minimercados with some food for everyday supply.
During our stay, there was the Carmen Fiesta that kept on until 05:00 which we found somewhat disturbing and after a few nights of no sleep we moved to the anchoring at Playa Francesca despite the fact we had not asked for permission to anchor there.
We had no problem with the authorities during the 4 days we stayed there.
Even with the distance of 1.5 NM from the harbour, the sound from the fiesta was so loud that we had problems listening to audiobooks inside the cabin. This was a bit surprising because in the brochure we attained at the harbour office it states you should not disturb the wildlife by making a loud noise.
If you are not into partying all night long you should check that there is no fiesta during the time of your stay.
We visited La Graciosa 15 March until 30 March 2016. Marina Lanzarote in Arrecife called Las Palmas to get permission to anchor at Play Francesca. The bottom there is good for anchoring. You’re not allowed to anchor closer to Caleta del Sebo. Playa Francesca is nice and we experienced it as well sheltered. We did send a form to Las Palmas the get into the harbour.
After two nights of anchoring we went into the port but the security guy said that we were not on the list and we couldn’t get into the harbour even if there was more than enough space. There was a ‘regatta’ coming up so we had to wait 3 more nights to get in. When we came in after those 3 nights they asked us why we didn’t came in earlier because we were already on the list for 3 more days…
It’s better to keep contact by VHF or visit the harbour by boat or foot. Staying in the harbour was very good. Well sheltered in big winds, cheap, near the cosy village and water available. There is no electricity and the shower and toilet were closed during our stay. We paid around €8,- per night. The office is only open during the morning hours. There is a security guy to show you a place 24h/7.
Works on the new marina at Caleta del Sebo have virtually ground to halt with [pontoons in place but no electric or water and ONE toilet+cold shower ashore for everyone – yachties and public!
Seems there is no more money in the government’s pot so it becomes expensive for what you get! Great for a short visit and eating ashore.
