Puerto de la Estaca - Docking

Entrance

A long wharf protects the bay and a breakwater providing an inner harbour in the northern part of the harbour for visiting yachts. Floating pontoons have been installed but there is not water or electricity connected.

The entrance to the inner harbour is very difficult to see as you enter the outer harbour. Cruisers advise heading for the red and green obelisks which will be in line then turn 90 degrees to starboard and then 90 degrees to port.

Call the Harbor Master’s office on VHF Ch 14 or 16  to make sure no ferry is leaving. They may not answer but they will be listening. The port police will help you to dock. The port staff speak English and are reported to be friendly. Cash only so stock up on cash in advance to pay port fees.  The nearest ATM is in the town of Valverde.

Marina Information

There is room for approx 80 yachts and there is usually space as the island does not get many visiting yachts.  (see photo courtesy of SY Mangata).

Toilets are in the ferry terminal and showers are next to the car park – you will need a key from the port police to access the shower facilities.

Protection in the port is generally good, but in July and August a strong local wind, the Levante, sometimes rolls down the hills into the harbor, making manoeuvering difficult.

There is no electricity, fuel can be arranged through the port police and water costs extra.

There is a cafe/snack bar in the ferry terminal and a bus station in town. The nearest big supermarket is in Valverde (the island capital), 10km inland (a steep walk) which is also where the nearest ATM is to be found.

2 km south along the coastroad in the isolated village of Timijiraque there is an minimarket and 2 restaurants.

Port authorities told me in the fall àf 2018 that in 2019 there will be a fuelstation and a shipchandler.

    I loved this quiet marina

Lovely quiet marina even though there are daily ferry visits. Masses of space since the new pontoons have been installed. (We visited in Oct 2018)
Nothing but a beach and ferry terminal at Estaca. Valverde is a 15 min taxi ride all up hill in case you were thinking of walking it. Found it hard to find the number to call a taxi so here it is +34 922 551 175. Came in 10 mins.

    Reported 25 September 2017
    A short updates for La Estancia in El Hierro;

I paid 12.88 for a 10-metre boat for one night here. It included water and electricity.
Wifi is a bit unreliable but works if you are patient.

The marina has pontoons for 20 boats against the eastern wall. More space can be used against the southern wall or you can even raft up. Space was not an issue when I was there.
There are showers (hot) and toilets. Staff is friendly. There is a snack bar in the ferry terminal. There is also a bus station.

Call port control on Ch. 14 to make sure no ferry is leaving, and port police will help to dock.
