Anchoring:

It is no longer possible to take your yacht right up into Bandar Seri Begawan. The Marine Department does not permit yachts to anchor upstream of the Royal Brunei Yacht Club Kota Batu premises.

There is a protected anchorage in front of the yacht club, just up river from the Temburong Bridge (Vertical Clearance 25m).  When anchoring at RBYC (Kota Batu) be sure to stay to the side, out of the central navigation channel.

Anchor fore and aft (to keep clear of the channel) just NE of the starboard lateral mark, close to the shore. The holding, in mud can be uncertain due to the 2kn current. This position is just 20-50 meters from the RBYC Club’s floating jetty where you can moor your dinghy. Use anchor lights at night.

You can hail a taxi to get ashore, although it’s advisable to leave someone on board at all times.

The RBYC has its main clubhouse at Muara (at 04°53.85’N, 114°59.26’S). Here there is a dinghy dock, showers, restaurant and WiFi.

Intrepid Marine has established a new anchorage and support service at Mangrove Paradise Resort on the Brunei River. This is just 10 minutes by tender from the RBYC (Kota Batu).

A new competitor, Progresif offers unlimited plans and cheaper rates (although 4x price than in Malaysia) but the speed was very low at Kota Batu RBYC so the unlimited did not really justify the 25Bn/week visitors plan and the 1Gb/week visitor plan lasted less than 1 day using smart phone to navigate in town! Coverage might be not as extensive as the original provider company. So perhaps best is to just use the wifi at the RBYC included in the 5B$ daily temporary cruiser membership including use of facilities, dock, washing machine!

The new bridge at Sg Kabun, just before Bandar Seri Begawan, has a clearance height of approx 16m in the centre at high water.

Following incidents of yachts anchoring mid-stream and without anchor lights in the Bandar Seri Begawan town area , the Marine Department no longer permits yachts to anchor upstream of the RBYC Kota Batu premises.
