I am happy that your stay was pleasant. There are many attractions that can be found in Itajai. I just caution outside visitors to be in a look out for any danger. I was Born in Itajai and lived there for many years. I am also not a cruiser LOL : ) for the most part you won’t have any problems walking around town, trust me you are not the first Gringo to come to that town. Out of personal experience, I see things you may not be aware of. Again the town can be a wonderful experience, but it would be nicer to have someone you know to show you around.

We were a bit taken aback by the comment that another cruiser put on Noonsite about ItajaĆ and the security. After cruising the Brazil coast for 3 months now, we haven’t come across a place where we feel safer than here. We do not share the views that are expressed in that comment.

We found Itajai was a good alternative to the much more expensive Porto Belo. It is not mentioned in any pilot book. The pontoons for the Volvo Ocean Race stopover are here. There are basic facilities (power, water). The berths are in the middle of town. Good provisioning, good connections by bus to other places in Brazil. In September 2014 we payed RS 1 per foot per day. First two days free. Pleasant city, lovely people. We feel very welcome here.

Even though Itajai has been one of the Volvo Ocean Race main stops in recent years, I emphasize what Noon Site already cautions Sailors about. Be careful of the youth, they are the most likely to do you harm. The basic profile of the common Itajai outlaw are young men between 15 to 25 years of age. Skinny golden tan, loose clothing, baseball cap, cheap Colorful Sunglasses, and sandals.

Drugs in Itajai are a frequent problem ever since I was a young boy, today nothing has changed. Corruption is present between Military and Civilian Police. I highly recommend a point of contact so your stay can be pleasant.
