UK: Finding a solution for the disposal of old and abandoned boats

End of lifeboats abandoned on swinging moorings and in waterways are a growing problem in the UK.

The European Boating Association (EBA) – which includes the RYA – have established a working party to tackle this issue of how best to dispose of old boats, in particular GRP and composite boats, that have reached the end of their life or are simply abandoned and falling into disrepair in sheltered waterways around the country.

The scheme will investigate a number of issues including financial assistance for owners who wish to dispose of their boats and how new boat builders could address dismantling and material that can be recycled further down the line.
