Martinique, Le Marina du Marin: Theft of dinghy fuel tank – October 2015
Dinghy fuel tank thefts are very common, and often preventable. Thread a steel cable or stainless chain through the plastic handle to secure it to your dinghy. Fuel hoses often disappear as well. Secure the contents of your dinghy enough so that stealing them would require tools and time, rather than just a quick opportunity and nerve.

Country Name: Martinique
Location Detail: Le Marina du Marin
EVENT: Theft
Stolen Items: a Fuel tank for dinghy engine, with fuel.
SECURED: Not Locked
DETAILS: Dingy was locked to the marina dinghy dock, sometime during the night the fuel tank was stolen and an attempt was made to take the outboard. The outboard was locked and was not taken. There were other items of value in a zippered compartment that were not taken. When reported to the marina office, they indicated there had been several thefts lately, but seemed indifferent overall. During a 2 week stay here the keycard type locked gates to the marina are seldom even closed.
Editor’s Note: Dock security is somewhat problematical in some marinas. One obviously cannot depend on pontoon gate security at night to keep your gear from wandering off. Don’t even leave shoes in the cockpit when in a Marina.
