Christiansted - General Info
COVID19: OPEN PORT
- Yachting protocols at USVI Biosecurity.
Description:
Christiansted Harbor is well-protected by a long reef and has an offset entry. The harbor has good anchorages, marina options, and marine facilities. The town of Christiansted has a population of just over 3000.
Cruiser Highlights:
The town is a walkable size and includes a variety of services and infrastructure including marinas and services; post office; bank; stores; restaurants; taxis; car rentals and the Vitran Public Bus (with service to the airport and Frederiksted). The international airport is 15 minutes out of town. There are also a variety of historic and natural tourist sites.
Entrance notes or cautions:
The entrance has good depths and is well-marked, however many buoys were mis-placed during hurricane Irma and have either not been replaced, or replaced with non-standard devices, making navigation difficult for visiting yachts.
There are many reefs and locals report several yachts grounded on reefs every year.
The entrance can be difficult with winds out of the north. Night or poor visibility entrance and exits should be avoided.
Position: 17° 45′ N, 64° 42′ W (Mid-harbor)

Entrance to Christiansted, USVI, is not well marked as is noted in the main text. Many buoys were displaced during hurricane Irma and have been replaced with either non-standard devices or not at all. The bifurcation marker is very hard to determine in any kind of seas. Locals report a grounding on round reef several times a year.

Update on clearing in at Christiansted. We had to go out to the airport to get both our passports stamped and have the boat cleared in. You cannot clear in at the wharf as the computer systems are not up and running there yet. The best is to call the airport st (340) 778 0216 to get the current clearing in the procedure.
It seems to be changing day to day as things come back online. When I called I told them I needed to clear in a private vessel. Try to get there before 4 pm. Immigration and clearing in the boat took about an hour but mostly due to the computer system being very slow.

St. Croix is EMPTY, come visit! I count 10 boats in the main anchorage, only 4 actual transients.
The island took a hit with the storms but the recovery work is underway and the spirit of the islanders is remarkable.
Provisioning, laundry, fuel & water readily available.
St Croix Yacht Club just got electricity up this past week – they are open for business!
