Lamu - General Info
The Lamu Archipelago extends from the Kenya-Somalia border to the Tana Delta, incorporating the North Banks and the Dodori channels. It’s an enormous area, covering approximately 2,340 square miles. It is also a priority conservation area, and Lamu Island is a designated World Heritage Site.
Lamu Old Town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa. Built in coral stone and mangrove timber, the town is characterized by fascinating architecture – inner courtyards, verandas, and elaborately carved wooden doors.
There are no vehicles on the island and goods are still moved through the narrow twisted alleyways of the town by donkey.
It lies approximately 60NM south of the border with Somalia.
Night Approach
This should be avoided as the maintenance of lit markers in Kenya is very poor. There are many unlit markers along the shipping channel here and some have moved. Be cautious when moving from the shipping channel to the Shela anchorage as there are hidden rocks. If in doubt follow the local craft.
