The earthquake struck near the border of Turkey and Syria in the early hours of the Monday morning February 6, 2023, while a second earthquake of 7.5 Richter was felt in the early hours of that afternoon.
The Cyprus Mail reported that the quakes and their multiple aftershocks were also felt on the island, with the geological survey department saying minor tsunamis occurred in the Famagusta area as people rushed out of buildings all over the island for safety when the second quake hit at lunchtime on Monday February 6.
Karpaz Gate Marina which is on the north coast on the NE of the Island’s peninsula, reported no damage to the marina or yachts in the vicinity.
Gwen Bylund from Marmaris Bay Cruisers checked in with Noonsite to say that she was not aware of any damage to marinas or infrastructure on the coastal areas of the region that was hit by the earthquake.
“But there was been terrible damage in both Syria and Turkey as the affected areas are some of the oldest inhabited in the country, with many old buildings and infrastructure,” she said.
Further south, Roni Zissu, the manager of Israel’s Shavit Marina told Noonsite that they too felt the earthquake “but fortunately for us no damages occurred in Israeli marinas as far as we know now.”
